Chelsea Defeats Real Madrid, Sets Up All-English Champions League Final vs. Man City
The rematch at Stamford Bridge ended with two goals in Real Madrid’s net and an aggregate victory for Chelsea of 3-1.
Timo Werner scored the first goal (28’) for the home team. Real Madrid’s luck ran out after Chelsea missed four great chances to double the score within the first 20 minutes of the second half. Chelsea managed to confirm its victory in the 85th minute after Mason Mount sealed the result at 2-0.
Chelsea is now in their third Champions League final after 2008 and 2012. After a deserved victory over Real Madrid, Chelsea will play the final game with Manchester City on May 29, 2021, in Istanbul. The game will be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium for the first time after the 2005 dynamic game final between Liverpool and AC Milan.
This will be the third Champions League final with English clubs only. The first such final was in 2008 between Manchester United and Chelsea, and the second in 2019 when Liverpool played against Tottenham Hotspurs.
“This was another energetic performance full of positive attitude and hunger, the spirit to go. Their heads were never down. Even after these big chances, they were positive. We are not done yet, we are in two finals now, and the sacrifice I personally gave was worth it from day one,” said Tomas Tuchel, Chelsea’s team manager.
Chelsea has managed to reach the UEFA Champions League for both men and women in the same season. Tomas Tuchel accomplished another personal record of reaching Champions League finals with two clubs after first losing with Paris Saint-Germain in 2020. He has achieved great success since taking over Chelsea in January.
Despite Chelsea’s success, major football betting sites currently favour Manchester City to win the finals.
Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid’s team manager, said after the match, “We tried, but Chelsea were the better team today, and you have to congratulate them. I also want to congratulate my players for what we’ve done this season. We gave it a go, but we were up against a team that was better than us today.”
